To overcome MS, it is necessary to better understand the mechanisms of the disease. In university laboratories and research centres, budgets for multiple sclerosis research are limited. Each year, research teams therefore turn to the Belgian Charcot Foundation. A few figures illustrate what a donation means.

This year, the Charcot Foundation is allocating €750,000 to innovative projects that are potentially leading to improvements in MS treatments. The winners presented their research projects.

Prof. Peter Feys (UHasselt) started his research project in 2020, with the support of the Charcot Fund, with the title: "Implicit and explicit learning strategies to improve the performance of a dual cognitive and motor mobility task in MS patients"

No summer at the beach for the Belgian Charcot Foundation. Preparations begin for the Charcot Fund 2023, which will enable experienced researchers in Belgium to launch innovative and pioneering research into multiple sclerosis

Prof. T. Vanmierlo works on the brain's favourite fat: myelin. In this video, he explains how he wants to strengthen the existing protection system against stress and thus give brain cells the possibility to repair myelin. In this way, he hopes to slow down or even stop the progression of the disease.

Prof. N. Cools is working on a study to make cell therapy "ready to use". Furthermore, the results of the research presented in this video could lead to the development of a cell-free therapy for MS that would avoid the drawbacks of cell therapy.

In 2022, the doctoral fellowship programme for young researchers, Charcot Fellowship, will be renamed Charcot PhD Fellowship. The call for candidates for this 4-year fellowship (worth 200,000) will be launched in February.

The Belgian Charcot Foundation is launching the Charcot Clinical Fellowship, a mandate allowing a young clinician to conduct part-time clinical research in the field of multiple sclerosis.
