Although you might not expect it, gut bacteria can affect how our brains work. An increasing amount of research is showing that these gut bacteria also play a role in various diseases of the nervous system, including multiple sclerosis. One major factor in the protection of our brains is the blood-brain barrier, which prevents unwanted substances from entering the nervous system. In this project, we shall be investigating whether and how gut bacteria can affect the blood-brain barrier in MS patients.
