Charcot Fund: fundamental research

Next-generation peptides as a therapeutic tool to promote remyelination

Apolipoproteins are proteins that combine with fats to form lipoproteins. Apolipoproteins play an essential role in the transport of lipids in the brain and the maintenance of lipid homeostasis and brain function. Our preliminary findings indicate that the apolipoprotein A-I mimetic peptide 5A notably enhances brain repair in MS. However, it has been established that peptide 5A is not suitable for a chronic treatment of MS due to structural dissimilarities to other apolipoproteins. By using innovative techniques and models, we will in this project define whether next-generation state-of-the-art apolipoproteins mimetic peptides, which are functionally and structurally superior to peptide 5A, can be harnessed to promote brain repair in MS patients.
