Hereditary factors play an important role in susceptibility to multiple sclerosis (MS), but also in differences between patients. An earlier Charcot project (2011) enabled us to demonstrate the genetic factors that determine whether a person will create a lot of antibodies in the brain, one of the principal features of MS. We have built further on this outcome by examining a certain type of antibody. This antibody is not directed against bacteria or viruses as in healthy people but against a person's own body, namely a protein (GALC) in the protective insulating layer (myelin layer) around the nerves. It is this insulating layer that is broken down by the immune system in MS. We examine whether hereditary factors play a role in creating these anti-GALC antibodies and whether they therefore build a bridge to the target of the immune system in MS.
