THE PROJEcT

The gradual paralysis experienced by MS patients is caused by protein changes. Proteolytic enzymes play a key role in the degradation not only of the myelin sheath, but also of other protective molecules such as beta interferon and other cytokines. In this project, protein degradation and certain changes to amino acids (citrullination) are studied in three ways: using biochemical analyses,  by identifying immune cells and using an animal model of multiple sclerosis, with the goal  to studying long-term effects. This research may lead to better understanding and ultimately to the earlier detection and treatment of MS.
