THE PROJEcT

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is characterized by three hallmarks: (1) inflammation, (2) demyelination or destruction of the protective myelin sheath surrounding the neurons, and (3) neuronal loss. Of the three, inflammation is currently best understood. In this project supported by the Belgian Charcot Foundation, we apply a multi-disciplinary approach with genetic, medical imaging and immunological methods to better understand the second hallmark, demyelination. Understanding why some patients are more sensitive to myelin damage or have reduced capacity for restoring this myelin layer after it has been damaged, would identify subgroups of patients in which remyelinating therapies, which are currently under development, would be warranted. This would help the patient and clinician in the choice of the best treatment for each patient (personalized medicine).
