There is a need for new, more effective treatments for the progressive forms of MS, in which the repair of damaged central nervous system (CNS) tissue is often limited. The immune cells responsible for tissue damage in MS reprogram their energy management in a manner that preserves the harmful inflammatory response. In the course of this project, we shall determine which are the changes in energy management essential to the formation of MS lesions, and how energy management can be adjusted to trigger tissue repair by the immune cells. For this purpose, we shall be using innovative techniques to analyse MS lesions and identify new therapeutic targets in order to develop improved treatments for progressive MS.
