Charcot Clinical Fellowship - Reglement

regulations

1. The Charcot Clinical Fellowship is a program of grants that the Belgian Charcot Foundation (BCF) makes available for young clinicians (under 32) working in a Belgian academic hospital. The grant will enable them to do two years half-time work of research dedicated to MS and make advances in the fight against the disease. A jury composed of members of the scientific committee of the BCF selects the applications to be funded. The announcement to the medical community takes place in early February by post and by email.

2. Candidates must submit their application to the online platform www.belgiancharcotfoundation-research.be before midnight on 30 April. The application must be written in English.  The following documents must be included in the application:

  • CV of the applicant with information that enable to verify whether the eligibility criteria are met (degrees, graduation, date, institution, grades)
  • Description of the clinical research project (max 4 pages)
  • Description of the work environment
  • Motivation letter of the Applicant
  • Recommendation letter and approval of the project by  the clinical unit’s head/promotor
  • Additional comments (optional)

3. The jury responsible for awarding the grants convenes before the 15 June. It will necessarily include the Chair of the BCF who chairs the jury. The other members of the jury will be selected from the scientific committee of the BCF. Written, or proxy voting is not permitted and only jury members who are physically present have the right to vote.  The convocation to the meeting and the applications for grants are distributed at least four weeks before the date of the meeting. The laureate is selected according to the respective votes given by the jury.  Apart from the usual criteria (originality, presentation of the project, experimental methodology, expertise, and justification of costs…) the contribution that the project will make to the improvement of treatment is an important criterion. The jury is authorized to settle any unforeseen problem in the course of the meeting. Its decisions are final.

4. The mandate covers 50 % of the salary of the recipient with a maximum of € 25,000 per year. The mandate has a duration of 2 years. The promotor of the research program must declare her/his support for a pre-defined MS clinical project. The mandate is personal and cannot be interrupted. The mandate must be fully dedicated to a clinical MS research work.

5. The budgetary year begins on 1 October (academic year).  An agreement will be signed between the academic hospital and the BCF. The agreement shall in no way create an employment relationship between the BCF and the Researcher. Thus, the BCF shall not give any instructions to the Researcher of any kind whatsoever.

6. The laureate is required to send to the BCF, by post or by email, after 12 months an activity report and after 24 months a final report to which copies of the corresponding publications (in the form of manuscripts, if necessary) must be attached.

7. Publications concerning the research carried out with Belgian Charcot Foundation aid shall mention the origin of the grants. At the request of the BCF, the recipient of grants may be invited to present the results of his/her research at scientific meetings organized by the BCF.
